Vienna is one of the oldest greenbelts in the world: in 1905 was established the protection of the Wienerwald and then also of the Bisamberg, Marchfeld, Donauraum and Terrassenlandschaft.
The city has 415 Km2 and half are green space: 75km2 are urban forest, 65km2 are agricultural use, 24km2 are meadows, 37km2 are sports fields and Kleinergaerten.

- Forest and Meadows Belt, protected zone (Schutzzone wald und wiesengürtel) such as the Schönbrunn Castle, the Auer Welsbach Park (1922), the Lainzen Tiergarten (1937), the Laasberg (1953), parts of the Bisamberg (1965) and the Danube Island (1978).
- Protected Park zone (Parkschutzgebiet)
- Agricultural Lands (Ländische Gebiete) which took two directions: horticulture/viticulture or industrial production
- Kleingärten which are small allotments often close to the city centre

in north east of Vienna where 17% of city surface is dedicated to food production.
