Vienna Greenbelt policy
“Wald und Wiesen-gürtel” is the main part of the “1000 hectares program” which was created to preserve green space through public purchase, land designation and design. It is not a legally binding concept as only some parts are effectively under protection and the level of protection varies. Building is generally not allowed especially in the Wienewald areas, whilst in the areas that are not under nature protection (south, north east) protective regulation were fixed in the land use plan. The boundary is not a fixed line but rather an orientation area.
In the 1990s the Federal State of Lower Austria introduced the possibility of rezoning building land into green land (without compensation), to prevent the stocking of building land.
The Land of Lower Austria is subdivided into 5 regions of which 3 border with Vienna and the coordination is supported by the establishment of SUM.
These regions produce a “Regional Decelopment Concept on Small Level”:
“Region Norneuberg-Stockerau” NW Vienna
“Wien Nord-Marchfeld West” North Vienna
Wien Donaustadt - Marchfeld Süd” NE Vienna
“Mödling” to the south.
